Rooftop Retreat

Rooftop Retreat

Challenges

This city rooftop had limited access to remove and replace an existing cedar deck that urgently needed to be replaced due to years of rotting and decay.   Our client, wanted us help him envision and create an inviting space to enjoy the stunning views of the Chicago skyline with his friends and family.

Opportunities & Solutions

Working in conjunction with Cook Architectural Design Studio, principal designers, we finalized a design that met both the budget and physical aesthetics our client was looking to achieve.  Due to the limited access of the building and parking restraints, we devised a pulley system that allowed us to bring up material safely and quickly.  In order to ensure the greatest possible lifespan of the decking boards we constructed the deck utilizing Timbertech, a composite material that is both handsome and relatively maintenance free.  The veneer you see on the walls, utility shed and staircase is natural cedar with a weather repellent/bronze stain to compliment the color of the decking.  Natural stone veneer was used to enhance unsightly structural building elements and low voltage LED lighting was incorporated to accent walls, the staircase and the outdoor living areas providing that perfect glow for a Chicago summer evening.  This is one example of how city living can be perfected!
