Challenges

This newly constructed single family home had a limited amount of space in the rear yard to incorporate a wide array of features that the homeowner requested.  We were challenged to install not only an aesthetically pleasing outdoor living space, but also a basketball sport court, raised garden and layers of evergreen screening and plantings!

Opportunities & Solutions

We tackled this project by constructing a raised terrace patio right off of the primary rear entry/exit.  By eliminating the need for a rear stoop we were able to gain back a significant amount of room for an outdoor kitchen and dining space.  Continuing with our rectilinear design that maximized this particular space we stepped down to a beautiful bluestone patio at grade that integrates a natural stone buffet island, fire pit and seat wall that also allows for a large family to sit and enjoy their space.  A small raised cedar herb garden was constructed near the garage just adjacent to a basketball sport court with Pro-Step Flex Court tiles for better traction and safety.  Final touches to this backyard oasis included a fortress of evergreen screening along the perimeter of the property to ensure privacy and beauty year round.  Last but not least, a handsome rustic pergola was installed to warm up the stone features of the house and terraces.  This project is a great example of how we can maximize limited spaces but not sacrifice on function and charm!
